Cancer is a major societal issue. A key challenge for cancer therapy is the complex and multifaceted nature of the disease which calls for personalized treatment. Radiotherapy has been used to treat tumors for more than a century and is still a staple in oncology today. Hadron therapy is one of the most technologically advanced methods of delivering radiation dose to the tumor while protecting surrounding healthy tissues. In addition, hadron therapy can reach otherwise difficult-to-access, deep-seated tumors. This lecture explores the history of particle therapy, its challenges, clinical results and future prospects.
